Bone Marrow Alternative
An exciting new option has proven a viable alternative for bone marrow
transplantation in children with life threatening cancers, certain blood
diseases and autoimmune disorders. Blood is removed from the umbilical cord
after the birth of a baby and stored, otherwise it is routinely thrown away.
The cord blood is rich in regenerative cells, which can then be transplanted
into the patient.
Project RACE is working with the International Cord Blood Foundation to
recruit multiracial donors and donors of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The International Cord Blood Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable
organization whose mission is to raise awareness about the benefits of cord
blood and to develop a cord blood bank from volunteer unrelated donors. WE
URGE ALL PREGNANT WOMEN TO CONSIDER BECOMING A DONOR. More information can
be obtained at http://www.cordblooddonor.org/.
Project RACE is pleased to announce that the International Cord Blood
Foundation asked for our input in the re-design of their donor questionnaire
on race and ethnicity. Susan Graham, executive director of Project RACE and
Professor G. Reginald Daniel of University of California at Santa Barbara and
advisor to Project RACE worked together to design a comprehensive format for
the International Cord Blood Foundation.
