SAT Turmoil
If you are a teenager between the ages of 16 and 19, odds are you have either taken or will take the PSAT or SAT. If you do fall into this category you may want to read the following passage:
I took the SAT in May of 2001 and felt as though I was prepared for every question on the test. When test day came around I was stumped when it came to the race question. The SAT allows you to chose one race or the category "other." Being the advocate I am, I checked white and black. I then proceeded with the rest of the test and thought nothing of it. When I got my scores back about 2 months later, I realized that the SAT had classified me as white! I figured that since the test was graded by a computer that since white came first in the selection, it thought that I accidentally checked black also.
Needless to say, my mom and I were furious. We called the college board (who administers the SAT) and informed them of our dilemma. They said that the race question is optional, but they will not print that on the test. They will not print that because they sell the racial information to companies so they can send you junk mail. So when taking the SAT for the first time or the last time, remember that you do not have to answer the race question! If you are multiracial and choose two races, it will classify you as the first one listed. Please pass this information on to your friends so that they will know too. Thanks to our efforts, a multiracial classification was added to the ACT tests a few years ago.
