Book Review of Betty: A Novel

By Tiffany McDaniel

Betty is a book I almost put down several times and I am so glad I didn’t. This is the beautifully written story of Betty Carpenter, a biracial (White and Cherokee) girl growing up in the foothills of the Appalachians. Betty looks like her father and is called all the hostile names for a Black and Cherokee person. But she is resilient. I almost put it down because it seemed like nothing was happening and then BOOM! Another tragedy or story from her father explodes and keeps us reading long past the time we thought we would. Betty is the sixth of eight siblings and must keep all their secrets. Betty is a must read.
