Knoxville News-Sentinel Changes Misleading Headline After Project RACE Request
Date: February 26, 2001
On January 31, 2001, I sent an e-mail to the Editor of The Knoxville News-Sentinel, which read:
Dear Editor:
The headline reads "Police seek 2 biracial women in recent robberies" in a
January 31st story by staff writer Scott Barker. A biracial person is a
person whose parents are of two designated racial groups, for example, a
black father, and a white mother. In your story, one suspect is a white
female and the other suspect is a black female. They are NOT two biracial
women. This could be very misleading. They are two women of DIFFERENT
races.
Correct racial and ethnic terminology remains important in this country,
and is no less important to the biracial population.
Sincerely,
Susan Graham
President
Project RACE (Reclassify All Children Equally)
A follow-up letter was sent on February 5:
Ms. Edge:
The misuse of the word "biracial" does not appear to have been corrected in
your online archives. Your e-mail stating that it would be corrected was sent
to me on February 1. When may we expect to see a correction?
I am very happy to report that the Knoxville News-Sentinel corrected its headline on February 6, 2001.
