Maryland Task Force Issues Findings and Recommendations
  Date: 1997

The Task Force on Multiracial Designations has issued its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly of the State of Maryland:

Recommendation 1. A method for reporting more than one race should be adopted.

1a. This method of reporting should take the form of a "check list", whereby an individual may select
      all race categories that apply.

1b. The following check list of races should be provided to respondents:

  • American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Asian
  • Black or African American
  • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
  • White
1c. Instructions for completing the race question should be worded as follows:
"Select one or more. If multiracial, check all that apply."
Project RACE commends the Maryland Task Force for having the foresight and wisdom to retain the word "Multiracial." Congratulations to Project RACE members, especially Julie Kershaw and Nathan Douglas, who worked with the Task Force to make this change.
