Multiracial Community Denounces American Statistical Association
Date: August 7, 1996
The American Statistical Association used offensive language in describing
multiracial people in a current press release. The release referred to
multiracial children and adults as "Americans of mixed or murky racial and
ethnic origins."
The insensitive and inaccurate reference was used to describe an upcoming
panel discussion, "The Categorization by Government of Race and Ethnicity" to
be held on Thursday, August 8 at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Chicago.
The American Statistical Association serves the government sector. Although
the panel will discuss racial categories, the panel participants are all
government employees.
The organizations leading the movement for a multiracial classification are
Project RACE (Reclassify All Children Equally), AMEA (The Association of
Multiethnic Americans) and the Interracial Family Circle of Washington, D.C.
"The correct term for a person of more than one race or ethnicity is
'multiracial', says Phil Savage, President of the Interracial Family Circle,
"We know our heritage. There is nothing murky about it."
