Advocates to continue fight for multiracial classification
Date: July 25, 1997
American multiracial children and adults will remain invisible under the
Interagency recommendation to OMB. "Mark one or more" will allow individuals
to cease having to choose the race of only one of their parents, but they
still cannot be identified as multiracial.
True advocates for multiracial children and adults feel this recommendation
falls short of what is needed for accuracy and clarity on the United States
Census and on federal forms. Multiracial children deserve the dignity and
inclusion of having a racial term that describes exactly who they are. The
message should be very clear: Multiracial children exist and the Federal
government recognizes them.
We plan to advocate for a multiracial classification by answering the OMB
Federal Register notice of July 9, 1997; working for the implementation of H.
R. 830; holding the Multiracial Solidarity March II on August 9 in Hollywood,
and showing solidarity for multiracial children and adults by whatever means
necessary.
