Harris Poll Uses Multiracial Classification
Date: July 18, 1999
Project RACE and The Multiracial Activist are proud to salute Harris
Interactive, a subsidiary of Harris Black International, Ltd., the
producer of the well-known Harris Poll
and a global leader in market research and consulting for recognizing
multiracial identity as a separate classification on their online polls
when asking respondents about race. The addition of "Mixed Race" to the
standard racial categories is a welcome development and sure sign that
multiracial self-identification has come into the mainstream, however the
preferred term is "Multiracial." For decades, multiracial Americans have
fought for recognition of their diverse ancestries. We believe that
Harris Interactive has taken an important step in the battle against
racism and intolerance in this country by recognizing multiracial
identity. Harris now joins a growing list of academic institutions,
educational services, hospitals, etc. that have done the same.
When President Clinton started his initiative on race two years ago, he
wanted to get people talking to each other so we could solve our
race-related problems together, as one nation. We believe that
recognition of multiracial identity is an integral part of that process
and salute Harris Interactive for taking that step.
